Shorts for the Summer: A Collaboration

Looking for the perfect pair of shorts?  We’ve got you covered!

I don’t remember hating shorts when I was younger. Come to think of it, I don’t really even remember wearing shorts.  Surely I did.  That’s what having 3 kids has done to me.  I literally can not remember a time in my life when I wore shorts (maybe) and enjoyed it.

Thinking on it now, I think that I was stocking up on sundresses for my summer days when I was in my twenties.  Or I was wearing capri pants, or jean skirts or something similar.  But, I was in my twenties.  I didn’t care as much about the versatility that a pair of shorts could give me.  Now, I live in Georgia, where it is HOT in the summer and I’ve got these three kids that I’m either chasing around or carrying around and convenience is key.  Also key is not flashing strangers unexpectedly.  Shorts are where it’s at.

But how do we find a good pair of shorts?  Where do we even start?  Why is finding a good pair of shorts so daunting?  I mean, first, we have to shave our legs.  Maybe you’re better at it than I am, but when I’m wearing the same makeup 3 days in a row, shaving my legs just isn’t something that always makes it onto the priority list.  Shoot, some days I’m still struggling to find the time to shower.  But, I digress.

Then there’s the cut, the rise, the length.  We want a pair of shorts that come up high enough that we’re not showing off our butt cracks when we bend down and we (I) also want a pair of shorts that help keep some of the front pooch under wraps.  I don’t know about you, but my personal mom pooch is strong, at the moment.  Small kids.  Then the length.  We want shorts that are long enough that our butt cheeks aren’t sticking out (because we ARE moms, after all) but short enough that they actually help us to keep cool when it’s so blasted hot.  And we want them to be the right fit so that we don’t feel like we have to walk around like a duck to keep them from creeping up in the middle, giving us some kind of reverse camel toe or something.  I don’t even know – is there a term for that?

So, I’ve been on a mission.  A mission to find the perfect pair of shorts.  And I can tell you all day long what I love and what works for me but we may not be the same, so I asked around.  I asked some of the fashionable women that I follow to give me their number one pick when it comes to shorts, as well.  If you don’t follow these ladies, yet, you totally should!

And in no particular order, here they are:

Jessica Burgess, Fantabulosity

Jessica, the blogger behind Fantabulosity, recommends this style from the place that I lovingly refer to as, The Mothership.  Target.  Must check them out immediately!

“They are 3 inch inseam, which tends to be shorter than I usually prefer, but these seem to be a-ok. Plus they’re affordable and from my favorite store ever… Target. :)”

Michelle, of Michelle Davis Designs, recommends the Gidget style from KUT from the Kloth.

“They have a little stretch which allows them to move to the shape of my thighs and bum but not squeeze me out. Length is perfect for my height with a 4″ inseam. I feel comfortable that the length isn’t too short or inappropriate. I love the slight fraying at the hem line as it gives a little youth to the style (can’t go full grandma quite yet!). There are several colors/washes and they fit true to size.”

I love these shorts.  I didn’t think that I really needed denim shorts in my life but after seeing these, I might.  I love the distressed look of them and they just look comfy.  Another 3” inseam.

Jill (or Jill GG), The Good Life For Less

Jill, the blogger from The Good Life For Less, posted about these shorts the other day.

I just recently found and started following Jill and love her cute, everyday style.  For me personally, I don’t love the visual of the pocket sticking out from the bottom of a pair of shorts, but I think she pulls them off and they look great on her.  I think they look great on other people too, just not my preference.  These have a 2.75” inseam, for reference.

Cori, the blogger, personal stylist and designer from Dress Corilynn, showcased this style the other day.

I love them so much on her but I worry that they would look huge and boxy in my size.  Only one way to find out!  Cori is another blogger that I just found recently and I really love some of the things she puts together.

Carli, Chaos Styled

Y’all know me.  Now, which ones do I like?

I found 2 favorites in my recent quest for the perfect shorts.

One was this pair from J.Crew:

These have a 7″ inseam and I got them in the navy color.  While I’m working on ditching the most recent baby weight, I was looking for some that were a bit longer than what I may typically wear.  I like that this style is a longer short without quite being a bermuda type style.  While this pink color looks slightly see through, the navy is not, however, the fabric is lightweight and airy (so the lighter colors may very well be see through) – perfect for a hot summer day.  These also come in a 5″ inseam and I think those would be just as good/appropriate.

My other favorite is the Riviera style from Loft:

I have this style of shorts in about 3 different sizes with several different inseams and slightly different cuts.  These will always be a favorite style of mine and I like that they use a twill fabric that’s a little thicker so you don’t have to worry about your polka dot underwear showing through.  I got the putty blue color which, to me, is sort of like a dove grey and matches basically everything.  This pair has a 6″ inseam, which I do like and I am happy with in my current body shape but I also tried on a 4″ inseam in the store and they didn’t feel as short as I thought they might, so again, those may also be a good option.
